First Grade Curriculum
Writing
Unit 4: Realistic Fiction
Students will be able to write about a real life story that can actually occur to people or animals, in a believable setting. These stories will resemble real life and fictional characters. Students will be given the opportunity to use multiple writing tools in order to organize their thoughts and ideas.
Reading
If...Then Unit: Reading and Role Playing: Fairytales, Folktales and Fables
Students will be able to understand story elements while reading fairytales, folktales, and fables. Students will be able to describe the beginning, middle and end of the story in connection to realizing the problem and solution. Through this unit students will also be introduced to different characters. As a class, as well as during independent activities, students will be able to compare and contrast using a Venn diagram.
Math
Chapter 7: Comparing Numbers
Students will be able to compare numbers using symbols greater than, less than, and equal. Students will be given math tools, such as ten rods and unit one cubes in order to make a model to support their thinking. We are continuing to understand how to solve a word problem by using CUBES, multiple strategies and explaining our work.

Students are becoming Engineers, and will explore the question 'How do we make different parts of a surface darker or brighter?'
Social Studies
Unit 3: Community
Students will learn about their communities and understand how they each play a role within the community.
